Parenting Goes to College: Helping your student succeed in college without being a helicopter parent

In recent years colleges and universities have had to spend more time and money managing overzealous parents. Similarly, many parents worry about how to help their son or daughter thrive in college without being deemed a “helicopter parent.” How should schools respond to such parents? How does a parent offer guidance without smothering or handicapping their child? This course explores the role of the parent in their college student’s life and reveals best practices of parents of children who excel in college and beyond.

Parents will learn:

• How to identify behavioral attributes that require more support in the college environment.
• Strategies to get their son or daughter child connected to appropriate campus resources.
• Ways to manage the parent’s personal feeling of loss when their son or daughter leaves for college.

From Maverick to Magnificent: A Leadership Development Program

Recent college graduates, Calvin Jonson and Myron Rolle, had tremendous success in college on and off the playing field. Johnson received a patent for an invention he created prior to graduating from Georgia Tech and Rolle earned a Rhodes scholarship as a result of his stellar academic career at Florida State University.
